No matter how the meat package presents itself in your local grocery store the glory days of farm raised produce are over. The image of a slaughter house isn’t as attractive as the farm fresh image that they try and often times succeed at getting you to believe.
Food Inc. is a great documentary to watch if you want to learn about how meat is actually produced and who is actually in charge of the new way that our meat is being processed. In this film, you can see how the chickens are plumped up until they are so fat that they can barely support their weight and their legs end up snapping off. Not only is this cruel and inhumane, but you have to wonder what affect these hormones and junk they inject the animals with have on our bodies. Companies like Perdue and Tyson were called out on practices such as this and of course both companies declined any comment.
The Earthlings films delves in even deeper than Food Inc. by showing detailed and graphic footage of what a slaughter house is actually like. The treatment of the animals is sickening and the way in which the animals are put to death looks far from sanitary. Cows are hung upside down, slit at the throat, meanwhile blood is spraying everywhere; the floor and the walls end up getting smothered in blood. Before they are put to death the animals often times are standing in their own waste that sometimes can almost halfway cover them or they are food deprived to the point where they often resort to cannibalism in attempts to survive.
So if you haven’t already I encourage you to watch Earthlings below. It may not make you suddenly become a vegetarian, but it sure will make you think twice about where your food is coming from.
Is eating meat wrong? In short, no it is not. However, the way that it is currently being produced is disgusting. It’s hurting the animals, our environment, and it is definitely having an affect on us health wise.
